Seeds I Didn't Sow
04:13
|
|||
Seeds I Didn't Sow.
In the garden where I live
I see yellow poppies grow
they just turned up by themselves
from seeds I didn't sow.
In the finest dress of green
they're swaying with the breeze
ballet dancers by Degas
they want no war but look for peace.
Chorus:
See how they throw a light on a northern sky
all the from the dust of stars a billion years ago.
And to such beauty roaming free
there are those who call them weeds
and say lift them by the roots
leave only cultivated seeds
They lift their lemon yellow crown
to the sun and take a bow
I know I never put them there
but I couldn't lift them now.

How Beautiful Upon The Mountain
Across the bridge at Selma
you came marching side by side
in your eyes a new world on the way
hope was in your heart
and justice would not be denied
you sang we shall overcome some day
Chorus:
God knows the courage they possessed
and Isaiah said it best
how beautiful upon the mountain
are the steps of those who walk in peace
Marching round the White House
marching round the pentagon
marching round the mighty missile plans
speaking truth to power
singing peace in Babylon
asking us why not give peace a chance
Now the generations
who have joined you on this road
look to you with power in their eyes
now you know the torch has passed
as they pick up the load
now you see their eyes are on the prize

The Dutchman
05:57
|
|||
The Dutchman
The Dutchman's not the kind of man
Who keeps his thumb jammed in the dam
That holds his dreams in,
But that's a secret that only Margaret knows.
When Amsterdam is golden in the summer,
Margaret brings him breakfast,
She believes him.
He thinks the tulips bloom beneath the snow.
He's mad as he can be, but Margaret only sees that sometimes,
Sometimes she sees her unborn children in his eyes.
Let us go to the banks of the ocean
Where the walls rise above the Zuider Zee.
Long ago, I used to be a young man
And dear Margaret remembers that for me.
The Dutchman still wears wooden shoes,
His cap and coat are patched with the love
That Margaret sewed there.
Sometimes he thinks he's still in Rotterdam.
And he watches the tug-boats down canals
An' calls out to them when he thinks he knows the Captain.
Till Margaret comes
To take him home again
Through unforgiving streets that trip him, though she holds his arm,
Sometimes he thinks he's alone and he calls her name.
Let us go to the banks of the ocean
Where the walls rise above the Zuiderzee.
Long ago, I used to be a young man
And dear Margaret remembers that for me.
The winters whirl the windmills 'round
She winds his muffler tighter
And they sit in the kitchen.
Some tea with whiskey keeps away the dew.
And he sees her for a moment, calls her name,
She makes the bed up singing some old love song,
A song Margaret learned
When it was very new.
He hums a line or two, they sing together in the dark.
The Dutchman falls asleep and Margaret blows the candle out.
Let us go to the banks of the ocean
Where the walls rise above the Zuiderzee.
Long ago, I used to be a young man
And dear Margaret remembers that for me.

Standing Stones
05:21
|
|||
Standing Stones
We walked across the moor that day in heatherscented sun
to see the giants rising from the earth
frozen in a circle in a game of pass the time
symbols of eternity forever in their prime.
Chorus: He stands beside the standing stone
and thinks on all to us unknown
it seems we are never completely alone
when standing beside a standing stone.
A hand upon the rusty red rock reaching to the sky
he wonders who they were and what they thought
did they love, did they fight and were their hands like yours and mine
weathered from the years of work but the gentle loving kind.
Today we have our monuments our churches and our towers
we're building up and tearing down again
since the life of man began we've had a need to make our mark
but on midsummer morning the same sun lights up the dark
We walked away that afternoon from stones upon a hill
a breeze of time swept lightly on our brow
at once so full of life we are yet closer to the ground
a never-ending circle of stones to which we are all bound.

Andy's Gone With Cattle
03:08
|
|||
Andy's gone with Cattle
Our Andy's gone with cattle now
Our hearts are out of order
With drought he's gone to battle now
Across the Queensland border
He's left us in dejection now
Our thoughts with him are roving
It's dull on this selection, now
Since Andy's went to droving
Who now shall wear that cheerful face
In times when things are blackest?
And who shall whistle round the place
When fortune frowns her darkest?
And who shall cheek the squatter now
When he comes round us snarling?
His tongue is growing hotter now
Since Andy crossed the Darling
Oh may the rain tomorrow fall
And all the tanks run over
And may the grass grow green and tall
In pathways of the drover
And may good angels send the rain
In desert stretches sandy
And when the summer comes again
God grant it brings us Andy.

Corryvreckan Calling
05:17
|
|||
Corryvreckan Calling
Alone on the deck in the morning light
She looks out west to where the islands lie
As the ferry boat pulls away
Down in the bar where the old men smoke
Tell their tales and share their old men's jokes
Sunlight shining through the grey
She lifts her hands as if to shade her eyes
And in the morning light she scan horizons
Chorus
She had a dream of an island home, a soft wind blowing and Corryvreckan calling,
calling, far out at sea
Down in the fields where the children play, they come home just as the
light is falling, falling
The children come home at close of day
Born in the streets on the town's dark side,
she learnt to run, learned to run and hide
Run anywhere but here
Other girls dreamt of being TV stars
or making a break in some fast, shiny car
Far Far away
The old folk told her tales of peat smoke fire nights
And in her dreams she sees the glistening starlight
She got a job in a hotel bar
A room of her own…a window to the stars
Under Hebridean Skies
She walks on the beach in the morning rain,
and smiles and thinks of just how far she's come
Sunlight dazzling her eyes
And if the chance it comes I think she'll take it
And after all you know I think she'll make it

Distant Embers
02:50
|
|||
Distant Embers
Farid he lost his dad and lost his mind
the falling sky still fills his eyes
big and blank they stare
like a sun eclipsed that brigthly used to shine
Farid he lost his dad and lost his mind.
Chorus: The children are playing in the fleeting dust
that knows no borders
takes no orders
knows no cost
Jusef he had a sister now he has none
the sudden shells eternal roar
playing knock knock on the door
they knew to fall below the school tables row on row
Jusef he had a sister now he has none.
The old men watch at night the distant embers
home on the windswept hillside
where cattle used to graze
without hope life stops, they say, so we remember
the old men watch at night the distant embers.

Childhood's End
05:04
|
|||
Childhood's End
Chorus:
Childhood's End was long in coming
But come it must for all our fear
For all our vanity, for all our stumbling
Childhood's End is drawing near
We laid the last old soldier to rest today
A lingering relic of the older way
There were no muffled rolls of drums and no flags did wave
In the breeze that was not blowing
And on the spot where he was laid we lit a flame
To burn forever more until the end of time
To all the other soldiers known and unnamed
No gun salute was fired, no Last Post playing
chorus
And a silent prayer was said by those who have something to pray to
While the rest of us joined hands and softly sang
And asked forgiveness from the dead for millennia of killing
For we knew now where the blame lay
And on the spot where he was laid we lit a flame
To burn forever more until the end of time
To all the other soldiers known and unnamed
No gun salute was fired, no Last Post playing
chorus

Bells Of The Town
02:17
|
|||
The Bells of the Town (Nick Keir)
Chorus:
The bells of the town, they bounce and they ring
They waken the morning with their early calling
The bells of the town, they dance and they sing
They're breaking the day, the bells of the town
Ding - dong, hark to the bells of the town
Ding - dong, hark to the bells of the town
Hear how they welcome the boats from the river
Piping the sailors ashore
Ready to spend their pay, such a long time away
Won't sail away any more
On Sundays the empty streets echo their melody
Calling the last few to prayer
Frostridden mornings, they startle the pigeons
And scatter them into the air
Once they were warning invasion and danger
The enemies close to the wall
Now the ring peals for the fluttering bridesmaid
Who congregate at the church door

No More Sailing
03:42
|
|||
No More Sailing
Silver sands on the horizon
Pull away we're homeward bound
Where the gulls wheel above us
But the wind makes no sound
There the harbour in the distance
And I've dreamed of this day
For I'll love no other
And here I will stay
Chorus
No more sailing
Never more to foreign lands
For my love's a-waiting
By yon silver sands
Of Morar
And I'll never leave those high hills again
And I'll never leave those high hills again
When the first snows of winter
Lay on the ben
I gave my promise
To come back again
But the winds were so cruel
And the seas were so high
And oft times we thought boys
That here we would die
Fare ye well to my companions
May we meet again
Every hour brings us nearer
To my journey's end
Now the sun sets behind me
As its light bathes the shore
I'll sing of Scotland
And wander no more

Paper Boats
03:11
|
|||
Paperboats
Chorus: In this life we are all immigrants
in this life we are immigrants all
Turn around Maria and see
your paperboat drifting free in the breeze
your son is sailing an endless sea
cry bring him home safe to me.
Close your eyes Maria and pray
for the boat is too full and the sea a deadly grey
will they see new shores or be pushed away
like paperboats when children play.
The irony Maria it drowns
on the shores of a nation peopled by the sea
now they're locking up the refugees
while paperboats keep drifting to sea.

Regnvejrsdag I November
03:35

Regnvejrsdag I November.
Jeg vil male dagen blå
med en solskinsstribe på
vælge lyset frem for skyggen
gi' mig selv et puf i ryggen
tro på alting, selv på lykken
jeg vil male dagen blå.
Jeg vil male dagen gul
solen som en sommerfugl
sætter sig på mine hænder
alle regnvejrsdage ender
der står 'maj' på min kalender
jeg vil male dagen gul.
Jeg vil male dagen rød
med den sidste roses glød
jeg vil plukke kantareller
løvetand og brændenælder
leve i det nu, der gælder
jeg vil male dagen rød.
Jeg vil male dagen grøn
dyb og kølig - flaskegrøn
sætte tændte lys i stager
glemme rynker, dobbelthager
håbe på mit spejl bedrager
jeg vil male dagen grøn.
Jeg vil male dagen hvid
nu hvor det er ulvetid
købe franske anemoner
for de sidste tyve kroner
lytte til Vivaldis toner
jeg vil male dagen hvid.
Jeg vil male dagen lys
strege ud og sætte kryds
jeg har tusind ting at gøre
klokken elleve-femogfyrre
blev november hængt til tørre
jeg vil male dagen lys.

The Surf and the Silverfishes
Cold is the Clyde when the autumn is turning
Cuts to the bone when the wind starts to blow
Not long to go till the cold watch is over
Then will be my turn to sleep down below
At home Katie Ann and the girls will be sleeping
Maybe right now they are dreaming of me
What would I give to be right there beside them
How strange when I am that I dream of the sea
CHORUS
For it's all I know the surf and the silver fishes
If I've taken from them, they've taken from me
And I long for the landing on the key to be standing
For I'm weary of dancing to the tune of the sea
White horses prancing look fine from your window
But somehow their beauty is wasted on me
For when you're forced to look deep in their dark eyes
Concern for your welfare is not what you see
The old trawler's mine, now I don't owe a penny
There's only the diesel and pay for the crew
But my debts to the sea still remain on the ledger
And if they're called, what the hell can I do

In My Mind
In my mind I wrote you a million songs
to try to put in words
that you are the moonbeams of my night
bathe me in your light.
In my mind I wrote a song of peace
to stop a warring world
but you are the peace of the evening bell
that rang when silence fell
In my mind I wrote a song of dreams
to try to catch a star
but you are the dreams at my fireside
burning bright
