about

Paperboats (Pernille R. Quigg)

Written after reading reports of the inhumane treatment of the refugees detained on the Australian islands of Nauru and Manus. A new Amnesty International report now has evidence of systematic torture. And this by a country largely made up of immigrants. The chorus line was inspired by none other than Pope Francis who said “We are all immigrants” in this life.

lyrics

Paperboats

Chorus: In this life we are all immigrants
in this life we are immigrants all

Turn around Maria and see
your paperboat drifting free in the breeze
your son is sailing an endless sea
cry bring him home safe to me.

Close your eyes Maria and pray
for the boat is too full and the sea a deadly grey
will they see new shores or be pushed away
like paperboats when children play.

The irony Maria it drowns
on the shores of a nation peopled by the sea
now they're locking up the refugees
while paperboats keep drifting to sea.
