This is our version of a very famous old German ballad “Röslein auf der Heiden” or”Heidenröslein” (The little rose on the heathland) It was written by the famous German philosopher and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the poem was published in 1789. The melody here is by Heinrich Werner.

The song tells the story of a boy who sees a beautiful wild rose and wants to pick it. The rose warns him that she has thorns but the boy doesn’t listen and picks the rose, and although she tries to defend herself his wounds are only superficial, whereas she is forever broken.
