Seeds I Didn't Sow.
Pernille R. Quigg/MCPS & PRS

Every year in our garden yellow poppies appear seemingly out of nowhere. I never planted the seeds but they bring out the sunshine. It seemed to me like an allegory of the human situation, the old fear of the stranger, which we still seem to nurture. It is however a song of hope.

lyrics

Seeds I Didn't Sow.

In the garden where I live
I see yellow poppies grow
they just turned up by themselves
from seeds I didn't sow.

In the finest dress of green
they're swaying with the breeze
ballet dancers by Degas
they want no war but look for peace.

Chorus:

See how they throw a light on a northern sky
all the from the dust of stars a billion years ago.

And to such beauty roaming free
there are those who call them weeds
and say lift them by the roots
leave only cultivated seeds

They lift their lemon yellow crown
to the sun and take a bow
I know I never put them there
but I couldn't lift them now.
